The Sunday Slice- Week of 7/27/2025

*inhales* I’M UNEMPLOYEEEEDDDDDDDDDDD!!!! *twirls in a field of flowers* but jk cause lets be real it was a great gig with great people who I’m excited to stay in touch with for the long haul! It’s weird being unemployed and not in crisis mode? Like it feels like (almost) every time I’ve been unemployed in the past I haven’t had something lined up and let me tell you ladies, gents, and everyone else: that is stressful AF. The last time I was unemployed I kept a spreadsheet of all the places I applied to (to keep my mind straight) and I applied to 95 PLACES. AND LANDED 1 INTERVIEW. SHIT WAS BLEAK. SHIT IS BLEAK. I know this time is different but there’s a part of my brain that is piping up saying “but Matt, how will you keep a roof over your head? But Matt, what if you don’t land something immediately? What about the medical insurance?” Is it trauma speaking? Probably. Anxiety? Most definitely. Have I named this voice? Definitely (his name is Max and he’s a 35 year old douchey finance bro who commutes into Manhattan from his house on Long Island and loudly talks about his latest deals on his car’s bluetooth with the windows down and I want to punch him in the face. Fuck you Max). Anywayyyys, I know it’ll all work out, but needless to say I’m a bit of a ball of anxiety right now thinking about the future! Excited? Yes. But also I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was anxious too. But in the meantime, I am ACTUALLY about to head out into the backcountry of the Cascades and car camp and read and takes lots of photos and twirl in actual fields of flowers for a few days and I could not be more excited. Trust, there will be photos. LOTS of photos.

Anyways- before I go down a really in depth tangent talking about all of the high alpine flowers I hope to see (lilies, larkspur, Indian Paintbrush, columbines, ok that’s all I’ll list for now) let’s get into this week’s slice! 🧀

Sunday Slice- 7/27/2025

Vote, Bitch (King County August 5th Primary and Special Elections)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: engaging in local politics is by and away more important than federal elections. (Now before anyone comes for me BOTH ARE IMPORTANT but as individuals and not as some billionaire super-PAC we have way more impact in local politics and ultimately these individuals and policies represent us and impact us more in our day to day lives). Ballots have been mailed out- if you still have not received yours in the mail, call 206-296-8683 or go to kingcounty.gov/elections. You can have replacement ballots sent (or submit yours online) at this page here. And look- I ain’t telling you who to vote for for Seattle mayor and city attorney, but I’ll def side eye you if you vote to keep in Harrell (and let’s be real- Katie Wilson and Erika Evans are looking like the best options- THAT’S MY OPINION) Check out The Stranger’s write up on each candidate here. They always do a great job breaking down each candidate’s positions, track records, and current performance (if an incumbent). We are really blessed here with a transparent and very effective mail in voting system, so please USE IT.

Mutual Aid Station: LFFC (Little Free Failure of Capitalism) (Seattle)

Little Free Failure of Capitalism not only has an amazing name (a riff off of Little Free Libraries) but provides some critical harm reduction supplies to unhoused folks (or really anyone who needs these items). The distribution center was created and is currently being stocked and maintained by a community member in the Rainier Valley neighborhood. The LFFC is located at 7014 42nd Avenue S– right by the Othello Link Light Rail Station- and is really easy to access. The LFFC contains a wide variety of items, including soap, shampoo, condoms, masks, gloves, socks, sunscreen, wound care, toothbrushes, Narcan, zines, and a FREE WORKING PUBLIC PHONE?? More info here on items that are currently stocked. This is an awesome example of someone truly creating something themselves to provide necessary services to so many people. And we can help it live on! Feel free to donate to LFFC here. If you’d like to donate something else, have suggestions, or just want to send them some love, please use their contact/suggestion form here. Please share this information with anyone you think may benefit from stopping by and/or anyone who wants to contribute. Oh!! And they have a really insightful newsletter sharing how many things have been shared with the community (and other information) here. I highly recommend checking it out. Let’s keep the LFFC going!

Volunteer, Donate, and Create with Seattle ReCreative (Seattle)

Ahhh- Seattle ReCreative. One of my favorite places in Seattle. A creative reuse store and community art center? What isn’t there to love! I’ve personally visited their Greenwood location multiple times to secure funky little items to make drag outfits and let me tell you, they never disappoint. But they’re so much more than a store! They offer a wide array of free classes, donations to community groups, and a Free for Teacher/ BIPOC Artist Program. As I am deep in the depths of moving a buuuunch of stuff and will be giving plenty of crafting/art/sewing supplies away, I am planning on making a material donation to Seattle ReCreative soon. If you’d like, feel free to come with when I drop off and/or add anything to it! Review their material donations page here to see what they take and reach out to them to let them know you’d like to drop off. I am planning my drop off for Tuesday, 8/5. If interested, let me know so we can coordinate. Oh! And if you don’t have materials but want to donate financially, that’s great too! You can do that here. I can’t stress what a gem this place is and any/all help they can get is incredible.

Well- another slice down y’all! As I look around my apartment in a state of extreme chaos (literally staring at boxes of packed up art and knickknacks next to a pile of clothing donations, my ballot for August 5th, a pair of mannequin arms, 2 tubes of half-used E6000, a tiara and a styrofoam head) I can’t help but feel reflective on my time here. Seattle has been such an impactful chapter in my life- filled with growth, strife, challenges, joy, and enlightenment. I’m so grateful for all of the wonderful people who have been a part of that journey, both near and far, and I truly would not be here without y’all. I don’t think you know how seriously I mean that.

Thanks for indulging in another extra sharp Sunday Slice (trademarked) (like how Kylie Jenner tried to trademark the name Kylie) (wasn’t that so stupid?) (I’m glad Kylie Minogue read her ass for it).
