I’ve had a hard time recently answering the question “how are you?” There’s an internal debate I think we all face on whether we want to provide the ‘simple, easy’ answer, or the genuine one. More often than not as of late, I’m answering honestly. Because like, if it’s possible to disassociate from:
- The abductions of immigrants, Pro-Palestine protestors, labor organizers and just generally any non-white person to be put into concentration camps in El Salvador
- The legislative crowbar being used to force open our protected areas for resource extraction and exploitation, and hollowing out needed staff to keep daily operations running
- The complete dismantling of the Department of Education to fast track the destruction of public education to prop up propaganda based private institutions
- Tariffs. Need I say more.
- So much more.
then I’m doing great! But, how can you? Are you really great? Sure, compartmentalizing is a survival skill to be honest. But damn…it hurts the soul. To smile while working on a spreadsheet knowing that there could be an ICE raid happening down the street. It’s fucking scary. It’s something that I know we’re all dealing with right now (if you’re not then like…what??!) Just some food for thought. Anyways- here are some upcoming cool things that we can be a part of.

Community Forum: Winning Local Ballot Initiatives (Seattle)
One of the few bright spots right now are local ballot initiatives passed at the state and local level, including some major upsets. This highlights a larger topic: the importance of grassroots movements. How do BUFU (by us for us) campaigns gain momentum? There can be significant up front roadblocks, including costs, understanding the inner workings of politics, and social networks. House Our Neighbors has organized a forum featuring the leaders of several successful local ballot initiatives including the Renton minimum wage increase, the Burien minimum wage increase, Seattle social housing, and Federal Way eviction reform. Come by on Tuesday, 4/29 from 5-7 PM at Centilia Cultural Center. Want to help set up or take down? Feel free to do so here. Interested in attending? Sign up here (it’s free).
Awesome Local Service: Rainier Beach Action Coalition (RBAC) Fresh Produce Boxes (Seattle)
Do you like produce? Preferably fresh? Sick of the wilted greens and tired tomatoes you see at the store? Well, have I got the thing for you! RBAC‘s Farm Stand CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is starting a produce box delivery/pickup subscription where you get fresh produce from RBAC’s garden! Interested in signing up? Check out the order page here (this page also has more detailed information on pickup and delivery locations, payment options, subscription options and delivery cadence). Interested in more events and information coming up with RBAC? Check out their Instagram here. And above all else- enjoy this fire clip they made! Who doesn’t love E-V-E?

Community Event: Wild West at the Wild Rose (Seattle)
Wild Rose? Check. Western theme? Check. Helping fund a top surgery? CHECK. Come by Wild Rose next Tuesday (4/29) from 5-11 PM for a night of rootin’, tootin’ and bootin’. And by that I mean dancing, DJs, raffles and other activities (like caricatures??). It is a costumed event, but do NOT be that fucking weirdo that wears something offensive. Oh, and if you really turn out a look? The two best dressed of the night will receive a prize- so show up, partner (sorry I’m done). Check out more information on the event post on Wild Rose’s Instagram here. Can’t attend but still want to help out? Feel free to donate to Oli’s top surgery fund here. So get your boots, your fringe, your hats, and whatever other shit constitutes western wear and let’s help get this funded!
Love y’all so much. Keep spreading light out there. Keep feeling and centering joy, because that’s a powerful form of protest right now as well. And KEEP PUSHING. Keep feeling that fire under your ass and push on to do more good by your communities. Stay safe, stay sober, stay celibate (jk on the last two, that was something they said in the morning announcements at my high school. I am not kidding, they really did. Reno, NV y’all).
