The Sunday Slice- Week of 3/9/2025

March is here y’all. The crocuses and daffodils are crocusing and daffodilling. Birds are back, being annoying as fuck (JK I love birds they’re so cute 😍🐔🍗). Spring brings hope. Spring brings energy. Spring brings rebirth. It makes me think of a quote from Price, the Ice-type Pokémon gym trainer from Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal: “When the ice and snow melt, spring arrives. You and your Pokémon will be together for many years to come. Cherish your time together!”‘ Yes. I’m quoting a Pokémon gym leader in my blog intro because I 👏FEEL 👏 LIKE 👏 IT👏 It’s also a pretty profound and beautiful quote. Price, I see you. The king that you are.

Anyways, before I make it very apparent that I need to get laid more often, check out this week’s Sunday Slice selection.

Political Action- Leave A Public Comment to the Department of State.

It’s no surprise that America, especially the new administration, is transphobic as fuck. When changes were put into place to reverse the 2022 decision to allow folks to self select their gender on their passport, it became clear that anyone outside of the strict gender binary was coming under fire by blocking their ability to accurately note who they are on official paperwork. Banning accurate IDs and forcing trans people to out themselves whenever they show an ID will only push trans people out of public life and expose them to discrimination and violence.

Tell the State Department: Everyone deserves accurate passports that match who we are. These attacks on trans, intersex, and nonbinary Americans must be stopped. Feel free to leave your comments with the ACLU here.

**If you would like to comment anonymously**– you can leave comments directly on the State Department’s website. Leave comments on the passport application process here, renewals here, and replacement/name change/updates here

Seattle-Based Organization: House Our Neighbors Education Fund

If you remember back in February, Seattle had a special election to fund social housing. Well, Prop 1A passed! By a 26 point lead! But this is just the beginning. Social housing is a concept that is new for most of us here in the US. It is multifaceted, misunderstood, and has the potential to drastically improve quality of life for so many. House our Neighbors (who ran the very successful pro Prop 1A campaign) also launched a side project- House Our Neighbors Education Fund. If you have some time, please check out some of the pages at the link above to better understand what social housing constitutes. If you feel so inclined, you can also donate to this fund here.

Change is slow, messy, and requires understanding and motivation to make change. I hope this provides a stepping stone for us all to do more research into social housing to best understand it’s potential.

Volunteer and Community Building- Seattle Community Fridge (Seattle and Burien)

Quick update: first two weeks delivering food, and it’s been great! I’ve really enjoyed meeting community members and getting connected with folks at the Food Bank.

If you’re interested in joining, I’m happy to pick you up on my next run (Saturday April 5th). This week I went with my friend J (thanks J!!). Pictured are their amazing fridge Tetris abilities.

And as a reminder: SCF is hosting a new member orientation on Saturday 3/15. Please RSVP if you plan on coming. You can do so here.

Volunteering and Community Building- Reno Burrito Project (Reno)

A few weeks ago I mentioned the Reno Burrito Project: a Reno based community led non profit which makes and distributes burritos on a regular basis to help feed our houseless neighbors.

They have some upcoming burrito rolling and distribution dates! They are:

  • March 23
  • April 6
  • April 20
  • May 4
  • May 18

For the March 23rd date:
Rolling starts at 12pm at the Center of Influence (1095 E Taylor St). When you enter, go down the stairs on your right and get yourself a name-tag to begin. Then one of their core team members will help you find a role or you can ask a fellow volunteer for guidance.

Distribution starts at 2pm where Evans Ave and E 6th St cross (near 215 E 6th St, across the street from Biomat). Please PARK ON THE STREET, not the parking lot (it is permit only)! You will see volunteers with carts and our signature blue coolers on wheels.

More information on their work and upcoming dates can be found on their Instagram page here. You’re also welcome to help them with donations here.

I am eternally grateful for the amazing people in my life (including each and every one of you!) Thank you for continuing to read my blog, continuing to support me, and being quality humans in general. Sending you all un beso de queso ♥🧀

– Matt
