The Sunday Slice- Week of 2/16/2025

The Sunday Slice: Week of 2/16/2025

Hi all! So I’ve been bouncing around a couple ideas of what to title this Sunday newsletter. At first I named it ‘Do-Goodery’, but now I honestly hate that so fucking much. Then I just called it ‘Community Aid’, but that’s drier than JD Vance’s love life. How are we feeling about the Sunday Slice (get it? Slice? Like a slice of cheese)? Sound off below in the comments.

To grab your attention this week, I wanted to tell a fun little story first before we get to the serious business. So remember the movie Interstellar, right? With Matthew McConnaughejsai? Well, if you recall it’s a complete mindfuck in the most beautiful of ways. What if I told you that the first time I watched this movie was after using a homemade gravity bong for the first time? And this gravity bong was made out of a mop bucket, a 2L soda bottle, some tin foil and a dream? Well let me tell you- mission accomplished. I swear I went straight into that event horizon with Matthew McConnafd3wefn myself. It was great. Anyways, here are some ways to get involved for this upcoming week!

ACLU- Call your Representatives

We should all know what the ACLU is by now, but if not you can find information on them here. (I promise, I’m not judging if you don’t know them already). Right now, the ACLU has an easy to use tool on their website here which will immediately connect you with the House representative for your district. This tool is specifically to voice your concerns about H.R. 32, the Defund Our Communities Act (which would cut funding for sanctuary cities nationwide) and includes an easy to follow script. Below, I’ll include places to find your representatives’ contact information and voting records for policy coming through the House and Senate. Be annoying and keep calling/emailing them to voice your concerns!

CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES and Be Aware of Upcoming Legislation

By design, it can be incredibly hard to know everything that our policymakers are voting on. Here’s a quick breakdown on some helpful pages.

Here is a link to a list of upcoming legislation that will be heard in Congress.

Here is a link to help you find your local House representative with a link to their website to contact them. If you’re in District 9 in Washington like me, then your rep is Adam Smith. His Washington State office’s phone number is (425) 793-5180.

Here is a link to help you find your state senators’ contact information. Plug in your state and it will take you to their info, including their DC office contact information.

Here is a link to Senate voting records (so you can see how your representative has voted for/against nominations and legislation).

And here is the equivalent for the HOR.

Get Involved: Black Farmers Collective

I mentioned the Black Farmers Collective last week as a great Seattle-based group to get involved with (especially if you have a green thumb and like playing in the dirt like I do!) To reiterate- volunteer opportunities at Yes Farm started this weekend and will be every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Saturday from 10:00 AM- 3:00 PM. More information here.

**If you are not in Seattle and would still like to help this organization, please feel free to donate via this link here. They are a registered 501C3 organization**

I hope you all had a Valentine’s Day weekend surrounded by love in any way. Whether it’s with your partner, your pets, your plants, or even your left hand. I’m thinking of you all and holding your hand (but not your left hand, you fucking weirdo).

XOXO- Matt/Vel/Gossip Girl
